Mosquitoes can quickly turn a relaxing evening outdoors into a frustration of itchy bites and constant swatting. By understanding where they breed, how they behave, and what conditions attract them, homeowners in the Springfield area can take simple steps to make their yards less inviting to mosquitoes and other biting pests.

• Egg Stage: Laid on or near stagnant water and capable of remaining viable until conditions improve.

• Larva Stage: Aquatic “wigglers” that feed on organic material in the water.

• Pupa Stage: Resting “tumblers” that do not feed, preparing to emerge as adults.

• Adult Stage: Flying insects; adult females seek a blood meal to support egg production, while males typically feed on nectar.

• Empty standing water every 3–4 days—birdbaths, buckets, toys, and other containers.

• Keep grass, shrubs, and landscaping trimmed; adult mosquitoes often rest in cool, shaded vegetation.

• Repair or replace torn screens on doors and windows to help keep mosquitoes outside.

• Use outdoor fans on patios and decks—mosquitoes fly poorly in moving air.

• Bacterial Larvicides (BTI): When appropriate, we use products containing BTI to target mosquito larvae in standing water, following all label directions for use.
